PETE has now been a professional singer of traditional songs and
teller of traditional tales for nearly 20 years!
Over that time his style has not particularly changed but it has developed
and matured and although he occasionally surprises people with a contemporary
or self-written song, or plays with musicians from other cultures, he's
remained loyal to the traditional English songs, especially ballads, which have
always been at the core of his repertoire.
At one time or another Pete has done all there is to do on the folk scene -
as well as performing he has organised festivals and both song and story clubs;
he ran a local radio folk show for 6 years, has done TV and recordings and
played to just about every kind of audience there is. Without compromising his
style he seems to be able to please both the most serious of folkies and the
lay-person who would not usually go to a folk event. He also works with
children and family groups and has been musician and song-writer for many
Community Arts Projects.
As well as his solo work Pete has collaborated with other well-known
musicians such as Dick & Sue Miles, Jez Lowe, Bing Lyle and Aroti Biswas.
He is a member of the very successful Anglo-Romanian band POPELUC (featured in Folk Roots no. 148)
who come together to tour once or twice a year and are rapidly making a huge
name for themselves.
Pete's 1998 programme sees him continuing his never-ending tour of the
country's folk clubs, arts centres, libraries and schools doing both song and
storytelling events and, whenever possible, events which combine the two art
forms.
He will also be working around his latest recordings: a pair of cassettes of
folk songs for children - taking the material into schools and other places
where it can serve as a springboard for other reading, writing and musical
activities, especially Book Weeks; and doing regular storytelling events at
various venues inc. Center Parcs.
