TENTERDEN:

Tenterden, situated in the ancient Weald of Kent, about 12 miles west of Ashford, is an ideal venue for this well-established friendly, family folk festival.  Tenterden features one of the widest High Streets in the country and the majority of the buildings are of historic interest and many are listed buildings.  There are numerous pub’s, restaurants, hotels and interesting little shops, a steam railway, vineyards and the picturesque Kentish countryside.  Where better to enjoy a weekend of traditional English folk song and dance?

EVENTS:

We are pleased to be holding a full day of folk music workshops for the students at Homewood School on Friday.

The Festival proper starts in the evening with a concert in the newly refurbished Sinden Theatre and sing-a-rounds and music sessions in several of the town centre pubs.

On Saturday there will be a wide variety of events, including the English barn dance, concerts and folk clubs, craft fair and street stalls, dance displays and a procession, story telling and street theatre, sing-a-rounds and music sessions, showcases and workshops.

The Festival continues on Sunday with the very popular acoustic folk club, music in the pubs, Morris dancers and finishes with a final late sing-a-round.

MUSICAL POLICY:

Although the emphasis remains very much on traditional English folk song, music and dance we also occasionally feature European and other overseas guests.   This year we are very pleased to welcome Sara Grey (USA) Jali Sherrifo Konteh (The Gambia) and The Morena Slovak Dance Company.

SOME OF THE GUESTS AND  EVENTS:

Following the success of the illustrated talk on song collecting in Sussex by Shirley Collins last year, we are very pleased to have her back with us this year to talk about her experiences working with Alan Lomax in America.  Shirley’s return fits in very nicely with the work of Sara Grey who has also traced traditional folk songs in both America and England.  Sara who is well known for her frailing accompaniments on the five string banjo will be in concert and running a workshop.

We are delighted to welcome Jali Sherrifo Konteh from the Gambia.  Sherrifo is a member of one of the most highly regarded “griot” families in The Gambia. His father, Alhaji Bai Konte, was the first kora player to have an album recorded in Europe and his half-brother, Dembo, has been a popular visiting musician in Europe for a number of years.

This year’s English Barn Dance is very generously sponsored by the Co-operative Group and takes place at Tenterden Leisure Centre.  The band playing for the dance is Jezreels, one of the best barn dance bands on the Kentish folk scene.   Doug Hudson will be calling the dances.  We are also grateful to members of Jezreels for agreeing to run the music session in the White Lion on Saturday lunchtime.  This session has always been run by the late John Smedley and will continue in his memory.

Pete Harris and Mick Ryan are making their first appearance at Tenterden.  Mick Ryan is well known on the folk scene as a fine singer of traditional and original material while Pete is a multi-instrumentalist and singer (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, mandola, banjo, bass guitar, and whistle).  As well as singing in concerts Mick will be running a songwriting workshop.

Julie Ellison is a writer of compelling songs with a voice that, on its own, would be sufficient to get her noticed, she also excels as an accomplished and imaginative guitarist delivering an exciting instrumental performance.

Do not forget all the other guests including Pete Castle, Ian Kearey, Pecking Order, Vic and Tina Smith, Trefor and Vicki Williams and all the local guests and the dancers, without whom the festival would not happen.

WORKSHOPS

This year’s festival includes a higher number of  workshops on song, music and dance.  These include Sara Grey on intermediate level banjo, Mick Ryan on  song writing, Julie Ellison on guitar, Jali Sherrifo Konteh on the Kora, Ditchling Morris on Cotswold and Raglan dance styles, Simon Wales on Scottish dancing, Tanglefoot Appalachian on Appalachian dancing.  See the programme for a full list and details.
