Tenterden Folk Festival

Press Release - June 2001

We do not believe that the restrictions arising from the foot and mouth epidemic will directly effect the ninth Tenterden Folk Festival in October. We do however strongly sympathise with those of our supporters who are involved in agriculture, tourism and the other industries that are directly affected. There may of course be some indirect effects on the Festival arising from the problems with the rural economy. However it seems that every body is determined to have a good time over the weekend of 5th to 7th October and the Festival guest list continues to grow.

Last year we were pleased to welcome the Dutch folk group ALTEMET to the festival and by popular demand we are please to announce that they will be back again this year. Altemet will be appearing in various venues over the weekend and will again be playing in the bar of The White Lion on Sunday. The band, which has been together for over 10 years, has a large repertoire of European folk songs and music including material from Ireland and England, but their speciality is traditional Dutch folk music. Last year they joined with local group Tan Tethera and played to a packed bar for several hours. The Band consists of Riet Duinmeijer; accordion, vocals, Anne-Guus Smit; bagpipe (Flemish), bohdran, flutes and vocals, Truus Marcus; vocals and percussion, Dirk Duinmeijer; guitar, mandolin and vocals, Joan Roetering; flutes, recorders, tin whistles and vocals, Pieter de la Court; guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin and vocals.

Trefor and Vicki Williams, from the Rhyl area of North Wales will be making their first appearance at the Festival. This duo performs everything from medieval songs sung in capella harmony, through to contemporary material, some self-penned, accompanied by acoustic guitar. They started out as a duo some five years ago and have since then performed at a variety of venues in North Wales and further afield. Since the launch of their debut album they are finding that they are appearing at festival and clubs across the UK and say that they are "finding songs in interesting places and having a wonderful time". Have a wonderful time with them at Tenterden.

The ninth Tenterden Folk Festival takes place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th October, and the full line up will be announced shortly. You can obtain further information or join our mailing list by sending a s.a.e. to;
