Tenterden Folk Festival

Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October 2003

News release - June 2003

The guest list for this year's Tenterden Folk Festival is nearing completion.

Guests so far confirmed include the Amazing Catsfield Steamers, John Barden, Pete Castle, Johnny Collins, Peter Collins, Shirley Collins, Bob & Kathy Drage, Miriam Erasmus (formerly Miriam Backhouse from South Africa), Bob Kenward, Keith Kendrick and Lynne Heraud, Ian Kearey (ex Oyster Band), Graeme Knights, Life and Times, Bing Lyle, The Marsh Warblers, Dave and Eileen Masterson, John Smedley, Vic & Tina Smith, Joe Stead, Trefor & Vicki Williams (Wales), Women in Harmony and The Amazing Zolas. We still intend to add a few more names to the list as funding and venues are finally confirmed. Also we are currently negotiating with a band from abroad for a very special concert on Sunday. More details will be announced once contracts are signed.

This year's festival has developed a slight nautical flavour.

Johnny Collins, Keith Kendrick, Graeme Knights and Joe Stead are all well known as singers of sea shanties and sea songs and will all be coming together on Saturday afternoon for a shanty session in the Eight Bells. They will also all be appearing in other events over the weekend at which you will see and hear another side of their repertoires.

Johnny Collins is steeped in the rich tradition of English folk songs.

Johnny is equally at home singing ballads, love songs, chorus songs and drinking songs, as the songs of the sea for which he may be best known. Johnny is known as the "Pedlar of Songs" and his repertoire comprises great old songs and delightful new ones by contemporary songwriters.

Keith Kendrick will be joined for the rest of the festival by his singing partner Lynne Heraud.

Keith and Lynne perform old and new songs and ballads from England and the rest of the British Isles. Keith has been a regular guest at Broadstairs Folk Week for many years.

Graeme Knights came to Tenterden Folk Festival in October 2001.

In 2001 Graeme led a tribute to Rod Shearman who had a died a few weeks earlier. Graeme may not be as well known in Kent as some of the other guests but is an excellent singer of traditional and contemporary folk songs and appeared at various festivals and folk clubs across the country and in Europe and the USA.

Joe Stead started singing folk songs 40 years ago and has never stopped.

When he was at Tenterden on October 2000 Joe presented his "Valparaiso round the Horn" concert to a packed hall. This year Joe will have a chance to show us some of his other material.
