JERRY EPSTEIN on tour from the USA
It has always been my booking policy at
Tenterden Folk Festival to present mainly traditional English folk
musicians but we also have a track record of presenting occasional visitors
from Europe, America or Africa. Some like to label this as “World Music” or “Roots
Music” but I see it more as illustrating the similarities and diversity in
traditional music world wide. Many of
the overseas musicians we have booked have had a connection with the Tenterden
and Ashford area or have performed material that has a particular relevance to
the English tradition. One of our guests
this year is JERRY
EPSTEIN who is on tour from the USA.
Jerry has been involved in traditional
music for 40 years and is widely known for his powerful voice and his
consummate mastery of the older traditional styles of singing. He is said
to be among the best players of the English concertina in America. Jerry is also something of a scholar on the
subject of traditional song and music as well as a performer. His workshops for singers, involving both
voice and traditional style, are widely respected in the U.S.,
and he has also taught singing at the Easter
School connected with the National
Festival in Canberra, Australia
and at the National Festival of Scotland.
Jerry has performed for dozens of folk clubs and festivals in the Eastern
U.S. and Canada
and he has undertaken nine solo tours of clubs and festivals in England,
Scotland and Ireland,
and two tours of Australia.
He is also a caller of New
England contra dancing and a teacher of English Morris and Long
Sword.
Jerry has a number of scholarly publications in music to his name, including
Music Editor of the Warner Collection, articles in Living Tradition, Sing Out! and
other publications, presentations at several conferences, including a conference
in New York on 100 Years of the Folk Revival and a conference
marking 100 Years since the English folklorist Cecil Sharp began collecting
songs. This perhaps highlights one of
the reasons why I think Jerry is ideally to guest at Tenterden Folk Festival
2005.
Anyone who knows about English
folk song will instantly recognise the sources of many of the songs that Jerry
sings and their roots in the English tradition.
