Steve
Turner is part of line up
A very special line up is being
put together for the fifteenth Tenterden Folk Festival. The guest list already includes some of the
best traditional English folk singers and musicians.
Steve Turner
comes from a family of singers and concertina players. His grandfather is known
to have sung and played the instrument in the 1890's. Steve began his own career on the Manchester
folk scene at the end of the 1960s, joined the Geordie band "Canny Fettle"
in 1970 and went on to make two albums and tour in Britain and Europe with them
for eight years.
In 1979 Steve won the Melody
Maker "Stars of the 80" National competition, which persuaded him to
turn professional for 12 years until 1991. During this time he made four solo albums with
Fellside Records and toured internationally. This was followed by a period of thirteen
years away from the folk scene with Steve building a violin retailing business,
Turner Violins, and diversifying musically
into a more classical mode of music.
Folk music has a habit of getting
into your blood and 2004 saw Steve make a return to the folk scene where he was
warmly welcomed to the extent that he was almost immediately asked to make a fifth
solo album. "The Whirligig of
Time" is now in process of being recorded in John Tams' studio in
Derbyshire and should be released this autumn.
Since returning to the folk scene Steve has made appearances at several
festivals including Sidmouth, Whitby
and Bromyard, as well as numerous folk club gigs
including several in Kent.
