JOHNNY
COLLINS will be in our thoughts as he was booked for this year’s festival Johnny Collins, who died in July, was a familiar and welcome figure at most of
the world's foremost maritime venues and festivals since the mid 1950’s since
when he toured extensively from the
U.S.A. to Australia and across Europe including Belgium, Brittany, Germany,
Holland, Poland and France. He also
sang regularly at events and venues as diverse as the Cutty Sark Tall Ships
Race, festivals and folk clubs. He had
a vigorous style and a supreme ability to get audiences to join in choruses,
which was unrivalled. Although he was
best known for singing shanties, sea songs and maritime ballads, his
repertoire was much wider and included other work songs and ballads. I first met Johnny in Lacock on a very wet
day in the early 1970 and cannot imagine the folk festival scene without him:
he will be sadly missed. JOHNNY COLLINS was
booked to appear at TENTERDEN FOLK FESTIVAL from 2nd to 4th
October and his close friend and frequent singing partner, Graeme Knights, has offered to
present a short tribute to Johnny. Graeme will be joined by Jim Mageean who sang with Johnny for
many years. This has provisionally
been named as “Remembering Johnny” and will take place immediately before the
“Shanty and sea song session” which Johnny and Graeme were programmed to take
part in on Saturday afternoon. Further details will be announced in due
course. 6th July 2009 |
