TENTERDEN:

Tenterden, situated in the ancient Weald of Kent, about 12 miles west of Ashford, is an ideal venue for this friendly, family folk festival. It features one of the widest High Streets in the country and the majority of the buildings are of historic interest and many are listed buildings. There are numerous pub’s, restaurants, hotels and interesting little shops, a steam railway, vineyards and picturesque Kent countryside. Where better to enjoy a weekend of traditional song and dance?

FOCUS ON FESTIVAL EVENTS:

The festival will start on Friday with a folk club, sing-a-round and music in the pubs. There will be nearly 40 events on Saturday including An English barn dance, children’s events, concerts, craft fair, exhibition, dance displays, folk club, Morris dancers, Appalachian dancers, music sessions, procession, quiz, street theatre, workshops, and other folk events. On Sunday there will be an acoustic folk club, Morris dancers, workshops and, for the first time this year, special folk trains on Kent and East Sussex Railway.

MUSICAL POLICY:

The emphasis remains very much on traditional British folk song and dance. We draw many of our guests from south east England, particularly Kent and Sussex, and also include guests well known on the national folk scene. Occasionally we will feature "foreign" song and dance particularly where this has a connection with the local area through the material or performers.

KENT AND EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY

Holders of our new "Full Weekend ticket" can travel free on K&ES Railway on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday K&ES Railway will also be running two special, "folk trains" with guests from the festival to entertain passengers with a variety of folks songs and music.

Twenty-five years ago, dedicated enthusiasts re-opened the Kent and East Sussex Railway - the epitome of England's classic rural railways. Today, the line is still run largely by volunteers and has become one of the area's favourite tourist attractions. There are engines and carriages dating from Victorian times to the 1960s waiting to take you for a nostalgic trip through seven miles of beautiful countryside between the historic Kentish market town of Tenterden and the pleasant village of Northiam in East Sussex.
